Wireless Application Protocol WAP Background Market study has shown that the number of mobile users is exceeding the number of PC users Some of the industry leaders have created a forum to evolve an industry standard for providing internet access to users over wireless access This has led to the specification of the Wireless Access Protocol standards WAP Model The WAP standards were defined keeping in consideration the constraints of the wireless networks including lower bandwidth higher latency and lower connection stability compared to wired networks Also the constraints on the mobile devices have been taken into account these include less powerful processors low memory limited power and small displays The programming model has been designed to be similar to the WWW programming model The content and applications are specified in well-known content formats which are based on WWW content formats A component called micro-browser has been defined which is a part of the wireless terminal and is analogous to the standard web browser WAP utilizes proxy technology to connect the wireless domain to the World Wide Web Figure 1 gives an overview of the WAP model The major components in the network are ClientClient could be a mobile terminal a pager a PDA or a similar small device The client communicates with the server through a well-defined protocol GatewayGateway is a proxy agent for all the clients It performs the translation of WAP content into compact encoded formats to reduce the data over the network Origin ServerOrigin Server has the specific applications running for the WAP subscribers
