When I was walking through the special exhibit in the De Youngs Museum in Friday afternoon Rembrandt van Rijns Simeons Song of Praise captured my eyes It depicts the scene when Jesus was being purified in the Temple of Jerusalem Although I hardly find paintings of religious background appealing Rembrandts usage of light and shade draw my attention The scene of Jesus being purified is illuminated as light radiated from the Christ while simultaneously the other part of the picture remains in darkness The temple itself was a vast but dark place so the central glisten of light seems unnatural But such unnaturalness also illustrate a sense of divinity while the darkness would assert an environment of tranquility in the long dark hall of the Temple lies a new-born child being praised by the wisdom of the old as if it was the song sang by Simeon that ignites the light and others sitting on the stairs listened quietly to the rhyme of the song Traditionally every first-born child of Israel had to be offered in sacrifice but the Jewish children were spared So when the child was brought to the Temple they were redeemed from the sacrifice with five Shekels And the scene took place in the fortieth day after Jesuss birth during when it was thought that the body was permeated with the soul Simeon was guided by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he saw the Christ and fulfill his task when he hold Jesus himself in his arm and sang the Nunc Dimittis meaning that Lord now you let your servant depart in peaceAnd the verses goMaster now you are dismissing your servant in peace according to your wordfor my eyes have seen your salvationwhich you have prepared in the presence of all peoplesa light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel Luke 22932Despite the fact that the Christ who is shrouded
