SCRIPTGetting Familiar Romeo Dallaire was born June 25 1945 in the Netherlands he grew up with his mother 2 sisters and his father in Montreal Quebec His father was a non-commissioned officer in the Canadian Army Dallaire joined the Canadian Army after military college became an officer and was eventually sent on a peace keeping mission to Rwanda Dallaire 8 Influence Dallaire says that as he always knew what he wanted to do As a child your father can be a good role model so just being around him made Dallaire want to be in the Army Dallaire never really got good grades in school but Romeos father always brought in tutors and other successful army veterans to make sure that Romeo lived out his dream of becoming a soldier His father did so much for him including helping him bring up his grades and thats why he was such a huge influence to Romeo Dallaire15 In late 1993 Romeo Dallaire received his commission to be the Force Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda UNAMIR Dallaire was originally sent to Rwanda to oversee the implementation of a newly formed peace treaty Dallaire 43 This agreement was called the Arusha Accords and it would put an end to a 3 year war in Rwanda between rival tribes Rwanda Peace Agreement Things didnt go as planned to say the least In April 1994 the Rwandan Presidents plane was shot down killing him along with Cyprien Ntaryamira the president of Burundi and Desogratias Nsabimana the chief of staff of the Burundi army Dallaire 224 The Hutus blamed the Tutsis for their presidents death and this resulted in a civil war So now Dallaire was stuck in the middle of this Civil war Welcome to Ground Zero RwandaMoral Dilemma When Dallaire was sent to Rwanda he was accompanied by 81 unarmed military observers and
