Albert Camus 1913-1960 The work of art is born of the intelligences refusal to reason the concrete -Albert Camus Life in Algeria Born in Mondovi French Algiers on November 7 1913 to a French father and a Spanish Mother After his father Lucien was killed 1914 at the beginning of WWI Battle of the Marne Camus was raised by his grandmother and mother an illiterate charwoman Although living in extreme poverty Camus attended the University of Algiers where he developed an interest in sports and theater His university career was cut short by an attack of Tuberculosis forcing him also to abandon soccer and his many theater activities Camus turned his attention to politics and journalism he was briefly a member of the Communist Party In 1938 he became a journalist with the Alger-Republicain an anticolonialst newspaper He began writing detailed reports on the poor conditions of the Arabs In 1940 Camus leaves Algeria for Paris after being dismissed from his newspaper job He returns to Algeria after the Nazi invasion The War Years 1941 Camus returns to Paris to join the French Resistance Movement he begins to write for the underground newspaper Daily Combat his editorials both before and after the French liberation showed a deep desire to combine political action with a strict adherence to moral principals By the end of the year he finishes his first novel The Stranger During the war Camus published the main works associated with his doctrine of the absurd - his view that human life is rendered ultimately meaningless by the fact of death and that the individual cannot make rational sense of his experience Writes the essay The Myth of Sisyphus Meets Jean-Paul Sartre on June 2 1943 1944 Became managing editor for the Daily Combat After The War 1947 he becomes dissatisfied with the editorial board of the Parisian
