Who The British general Barry St Leger Not much is known about him The American General was Nicholas Herkimer He was born in a German settlement near Herkimer New York After serving in the French and Indian War he was appointed a brigadier general in the New York militia The county and the village of Herkimer New York were named in his honor What The Battle of Oriskany has been described as the most severe and for the numbers involved one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution Fought in the summer of 1777 it was a significant factor in the momentous events of that year - a turning point in the war The British had a scheme to quell the rebellious colonies in a three-pronged invasion of New York subjugating the state and thereby dividing the northern states from those to the south To help execute the plan Barry St Leger was temporarily promoted to Brigadier General St Leger was to lead his troops by way of Fort Ontario and the Mohawk Valley to Albany There they would join the main British force under Burgoyne coming south from Canada along Lake Champlain and the Hudson River and a third group striking north from New York City As they approached the Mohawk Valley St Legers invaders met unexpected resistance from the Patriots at Fort Stanwix The fort did not fall easily as the British had anticipated Moreover news of the threatening attack spread quickly throughout the valley Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer commander of the Colonial militia in the Mohawk Valley rallied 800 men and boys and set off to relieve the besieged fort St Leger ordered Tory leaders Sir John Johnson and Colonel John Butler both former residents of the Mohawk region to direct a group of Loyalists against Herkimers attack Indians led by the Mohawk chief Thayendanegea Joseph Brant accompanied the Tory troops Johnson prepared his followers to ambush the oncoming Patriots from
