Bishop Desmond Tutu is legendary as a person who has worked all his life to achieve an egalitarian and just society His biography can be divided into five sections general information qualifications career awards and main publications Desmond Tutu was born on 7th October 1931 in Transvaal South Africa He married Leah when he was 24 years old and they have three daughters and one son He not only embraces Christianity but also is interested in music and reading After leaving school Desmond Tutu trained first as a teacher at Pretoria Bantu Normal College and got Higher Teachers Diploma in 1953 Soon afterwards he got the Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of South Africa He was ordained as a priest from St Peters Theological College South Africa in 1960 Six years later he got a Master of Theology Degree at the University of London In 1954 Desmond Tutu graduated from the University immediately after which he worked for Munisville High School as a high school teacher Leaving this job in 1957 and from 1960 he spent the next twenty years being a Parish priest and church administrator Towards the beginning of this period he worked as a church administrator while he was studying theology in England After that in the following five years he taught theology in South Africa before returning to England for three years as the assistant director of a theological institute in London In 1975 he was appointed Dean of St Marys Cathedral in Johannesburg South Africa the first black person to hold that position Soon afterwards he was Bishop of Lesotho until 1978 he became the first black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches which is a contact organization for the churches of South Africa and functions as a national committee for the World Council of Churches He was Johannesburgs first black Anglican bishop from 1981 to 1985 In the following year he
