Task how does carol Ann Duffy portray the grim reality of life through the poems Stealing Valentine and War photographer Duffy was born in Glasgow in 1955 she attended school in stoke and at the age of seventeen she married a 39 year old poet called andiron hendril He and his work so much that see began to write her own poetry inspired Duffy Her poems deal with every day things and it is very easy for people to relate to them She says My poems come from everyday experiences my pastmemories and imagination people and characters are fascinating to me All of her poems focus on issues that all people can relate to she writes to express her feeling and informeducate people of what is happening in the world She tries to lighten people on serious issues Because her poems that she writes can be seen as controversial she missed out on becoming poet laureateStealing was published in a collection of poems entitled selling Manhattans 1987 this poem was written to criticize the thatcherite government in the 1980s when there was a high rate of unemployment and many school leavers left with little or no qualifications and no real prospects stealing was aimed to alert people about this situation and the consequences of social depravation Stealing is written in the first person The speaker in it is very obviously not the poet Carol Ann Duffy writes sympathetically in a way that she tries to understand an anti-social character What she shows is not a clever criminal but someone for who is stealing to beat boredom Throughout the poem are hints of constructive pursuits making a snowman and artistic things a guitar a bust of Shakespeare The thief steals and destroys but cannot make anything I think the speaker is telling his various thefts to a police officer or a social worker He realises at the
