Bill Hart Cicero Cicero was born on January 6 106 BC His grandfather had come from the Volscian family and belonged to the old virile people of the republic His grandmother was of the Gratidia family who was closely connected to many prominent Roman politicians His father was successful in increasing his family estate by agriculture and from the profits from a fullingmill and became one of the richest of his townsmen His mother Helvia was a member of the nobility and therefore brought the family connected with other senatorial families His father devoted himself to the education of his two sons for this reason he moved to the city Cicero came into contact with such great orators as M Antonius and L Crassus through his fathers connections and they themselves took interest in his education His instructors were Greek and formed his purpose to attain power through the use of oratory although he did not limit his learnings to just theoretical or technical learning He would visit the Forum to witness the great orators of his time especially Antonius and Crassus They in turn discoursed to him and eventually became his teachers of the oratory skill He studied the art of delivery in the theater and in turn became acquainted with the great actors Roscius and Aesophus He had said that his most important means of education for him was the translation he did from the Greek At the age of 16 Cicero received his toga virilis the coming out of a Roman boy and from that point on he dedicated himself to law statesmanship and oratory He was then put under the charge of Mucius Scaevola and later attached himself with Ponifex In 89 BC he left and served in one military campaign under Cn Pompeius Strabo After his short military career he returned and studied philosophy under Phaedrus and Philo oratory under Molo
