Colin Luther Powell was born on April 5 1937 in The Bronx NY His parents were immigrants from Jamaica Colin went to the City College of New York and earned a degree in geology Later after college he joined the Pershing Rifles This drill team was named after the General of the Army John Pershing He soon became a four star general For 35 years he was a professional soldier and had many command and staff duties In 1971 he earned a MBA in George Washington University and then served in the White House below Richard Nixon He served in at Fort Carson Colorado in the early 1980s Colin was given rewards such as Soldiers Medal Bronze Star Medal Purple Heart Air Medal Joint Service Commendation Medal Defense Superior Service Medal and many many more At age 49 he left the army and became Ronald Reagans last National Security Advisor from 1987 to 1989 From October 1 1989 to September 30 1993 he was the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs which are the highest military positions in the department of defense He has supervised over 28 crisiss including Operation Desert Storm In 1996 he was asked to go against Bill Clinton in presidential election but Colin said no He was the 65th United States Secretary of State from January 20 2001 to January 23 2005 Colin became the highest ranking African American in US history After he retired from the army he wrote a best-selling memoir called My American Journey and began a career as a public speaker talking about his experiences in life He is now a republican and is willing to support liberal causes He is for reasonable gun control and is against gays to serve in the military His most recent award is the Silver Buffalo Award which is the highest adult award given by the Boy Scouts of America
