HG Wells Full name Herbert George Wells was born on September 21 1866 In 1883 he obtained a scholarship to the Normal School of Science of London and studied biology under TH Huxley Huxley was a believer of Darwinism which involves around Theory of Evolution and survival of the fittest This is one of the reasons why HG Wells wrote many stories with scientific elements such as his debut novel The Time Machine in 1895 and The War of The Worlds 7 years later Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22 1859 in Edinburgh His family had an important position in the world of art and family tradition would have led Arthur into an artistic career But instead he decided to be a medical doctor He was trained in University of Edinburgh by Dr Bryan Charles In University of Edinburgh Doyle met a number of future authors such as James Barrie and Robert Louis Stevenson But the man who influenced him was one of his teachers Dr Joseph Bell He was a good doctor and a master at observation logic deduction and diagnosis All of these qualities were later found in the characteristics of detective Sherlock Holmes Arthur Conan Doyle opened his first practice as GP in Portsmouth and also at the same time began to write stories In May 1891 Conan Doyle suffered from an attack of influenza while writing some of the early Sherlock Holmes stories When his health improved he decided to abandon his medical career and concentrate on story-writing The Speckled Band was written in 1892 and Doyle became famous for his story The Lost World Sir Conan Doyle died on July 4 1930 Even though neither of the stories The Red Room and The Speckled Band are in the horror genre The Red Room is ghost while The Speckled Band is detective they both contain very strong elements of horror The main difference between the two stories
