J D Salinger J D Salinger was a very controversial writer He was controversial in his lifetime and even today some of his writings would be considered controversial He wrote many things about the problems the soldiers of WWII encountered during the war and after it such as losing their jobs and the post war syndrome which affected their minds He also wrote many things about the conflicts in society in his novel The Catcher in the Rye which depicted the problems of a teenager at a prep school and after A lot of Salingers writings can be tied to his own personal experiences Therefore in this paper I will show that Salinger has many symbolisms in his writings including many of them being his own personal experiences Salinger was born on January 1 1919 He was the son of a Jewish father and a Christian mother He grew up in Manhattan the younger of two children He attended a variety of prep schools and received average grades He was expelled from three different prep schools and finally graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in 1936 His experiences throughout his first years of schooling were how he got many of his views of society and the world In one of his most famous novels Catcher in the Rye he has the main character getting expelled from a view prep schools and as you see in the beginning of the book he gets expelled from Pencey Prep School Many believe it was modeled after Valley Forge His years of college were not much better than those of his early years He first attended Ursinus College in Pennsylvania He dropped out in the middle of his first semester He then attended New York University and Columbia In his years at college he was introduced to the art of writing While he was at Columbia he met his teacher Whit Burnett who later became the
