Louis Pasteur was born on December 27th 1822 in a region of Jura France His parents were Jean Joseph Pasteur a poorly educated tanner and Jeanne Etiennette Roqui an intelligent and kind-hearted lady Growing up Louis enjoyed playing with his younger sisters Virginie and Josephine and hearing his fathers tales of Emperor Napoleons wars These stories were said to have stirred a strong patriotic passion in his heart that lasted until his death As a little boy Louis did not show any sign of a great-scientist-in-the-making His interests lay mainly in drawing which he was exceptionally good at It has been said that if Louis had never found his career in science he certainly wouldve been known as a great artist When Louis was six years old his father sent him to study primary and secondary education at a college in Arbois There he received primary and secondary education Soon after Arbois Louis attended the Royal College in Besancon He earned his BA and BSc by 1942 and showed great potential as a professor He was accepted at the Ecole Normale Superieure the well-known teachers college in Paris He became the Professor of Physics at Dijon Lycee and shortly after two years he was invited to join Strasburg University There he served successfully as a Professor of Chemistry This is where he met and fell in love with Marie Laurent after a few short weeks They were married May 29 1849 and enjoyed a happy marriage Marie was an irreplaceable companion who understood her husbands passion for science They have five children together although only two survived In 1854 he became Professor of Chemistry and Dean of Sciences at the University of Lille Louis had always been a theoretical scientist but he wanted to change by taking a deeper look in his research At Lille he met an industrialist Monsieur Bigo Bigo inspired him to study the process of fermentation In 1857 he published a
