One of historys greatest leaders was Mahatma Gandhi because of his complete identification with the people of Indias 700000 villages A small movement at first became a national plan for India after the entire country got behind what Gandhi was trying to do Mahatma Gandhi changed his appearance and pushed policies in order to become a popular leader to the common people of India Changes to Gandhis appearance played a major role in the movement toward a free India These changes included Gandhi only wearing a dhoti so that he could be independant from the British A dhoti is a rectangular piece of unstitched cloth wrapped around the waist and legs and knotted at the waist resembling a long skirt Gandhi also encouraged many other Indians to join him in only wearing a dhoti to show the British they wanted to be free Followers would throw almost all of their clothes into a fire in order to show they followed Mahatma Gandhi Another appearance of Gandhi which changed his body immensely was his 21 day fast He started to fast in order to prevent a civil war between the Hindu and Muslims This idea worked for him because everybody at this time was a follower of Gandhi and obeyed him His fast caused him to lose a lot of weight and forced him on to the brink of death but this appearance change saved a lot of lives within the Hindu and Muslim people The biggest factor in the movement of Gandhis people were the policies he created to gain freedom These policies included being forcibly ejected from a British train the Salt March and the Dharasana Satyagraha The incident of the British train was Gandhis first act of nonviolent civil disobedience he refused to move out of first class seating because of his ethnicity This rebelling act got him thrown off the train at Pietermaritzburg and also began his quest toward a free India
