In 1513 Niccolo Machiavelli a prominent political philosopher of the Italian Renaissance wrote The Prince which eventually became his most famous piece of work control The Prince stands apart from all other political writings of the period because it focuses on the practical problems a monarch faces in staying in power rather than more speculative issues explaining the foundation of political authority Internet Encyclopedia Paragraph 1 Written during a time of political upheaval Machiavelli intended The Prince to provide the princes of the period with a method by which they can acquire and maintain political power Encarta Paragraph 2 However The Prince also established the term Machiavellianism which is used today in describing the principles of power politics and against Machiavellis intentions defines rulers that follow his philosophy merely believing that the ends justify the means Although the definition of Machiavellianism is the subordination of ethics to political power the way in which the term has been used to define dictators who commit horrendous acts against humanity is not what Machiavelli described in The Prince Marienschule Paragraph 2 According to Machiavelli certain characteristics are necessary in order for a ruler to be a true Machiavellian King One such characteristic is that all acts of violence that need to be done should be done at once because otherwise the princes reign will be dominated by violence A reign dominated by violence may lead to mistrust and anxiety towards the prince which then makes the prince likely to be the victim of conspiracy Machiavelli also claims that a sovereign should prefer to be feared than be loved by the people however the prince should not be hated by the people If necessary a prince must also be deceitful but while being deceitful he must also represent honesty uprightness religiousness mercy and humanity Internet Encyclopedia Paragraph 3 Machiavelli believed that if a prince represented those five virtues his reign would be free of trouble In The Prince
