Paul of Tarsus When you think of Christianity the first person you think about is most certainly Jesus but after him most people would think of Paul Paul was Christianitys first missionary he was one of the first men to share his faith with the gentiles and his letters to churches and friends make up nearly half of the new testament and that is why he has been the most influential person in Christianity besides Jesus Christ Saul was born somewhere around the year 3 A D in the city of Tarsus He was named Saul after the Isreals first king from the tribe of Benjamin and was given the Latin name Paul because he was raised in a Roman territory His Pharisee parents obeyed all of the Jewish ordinances and tried to bring him up as a traditional Jewish child From birth until he reached the age of ten Saul was educated by his parents He was taught scriptures and other religious writings by his father and was also taught about the Greek language culture and history When he was around ten years old went to the rabbinical school of Gamaliel Gamaliel was the most famous rabbi in this time and he set up a school where the students studied scripture and many other things and voiced their opinions on what they read and learned about Saul enjoyed this school and Gamaliel thought that he would someday be a great leader Some time during his mid-twenties Saul went back to Tarsus and joined his father making tents for around ten years While working Saul gained the respect of many riends and was expected to someday become a leader in the Jewish community Saul despised all of the Christians and did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah because He appeared to disapprove of all of the Pharisees rules Saul thought that all Christians should be put to death and he returned
