John Steinbeck was a famous American author who wrote from the 1920s to the 1940s He was constantly moving across the country trying to succeed as a writer Steinbeck had some trouble in school and then in the job world before writing He lived a life of constant ups downs successes and failures before he landed on his feet and became a famous author John Steinbeck was born in Salinas California on February 27 1902 He was the only son and the third child of four that belonged to John Ernst Steinbeck and Olive Hamilton Steinbecks father owned a comfortable Victorian house in Salinas His father managed the Sperry Flour Mill Things were pretty good for the Steinbeck family They were settled in a nice home and they did not have too many financial problems but then economic difficulties forced the dismissal of John Steinbeck Sr from the mill Steinbecks father decided to open a feed and grain store and go into business himself The store struggled to stay open and eventually could not at all A close friend of Johns father got him a job as an accountant for the Spreckles Sugar Company Although he had a job Johns father was extremely devastated by the lose of his business Encouraged by his parents Steinbeck began to develop a love literature During his years at Salinas High School John excelled in English At the end of his freshman year in high school John had decided that he wanted to become a writer At the end of his senior year Steinbeck applied to Stanford University and was accepted as an English undergraduate student Coming of his success in high school John felt very confident that he would succeed To pay for his education at Stanford John went to school for half a year and then worked the other half He found college boring and felt that
