Theodore Roosevelt The Man The Myth The Legend Theodore Roosevelt feared by many political figures but accepted amongst the people He loved the feeling of power A common quote by President Roosevelt was Speak softly and carry a big stick he was a reserved man but yet not afraid to voice his opinon Up until his death Roosevelt always had a voice in the public and is still recognized and one of our greatest presidents If only I could be president and congress for ten minutes This quote from President Roosevelt sums up his entire life He was always on the move and he wanted things done and he wanted them done fast Roosevelt was very dissatified with being the Vice President of the United States in 1900 President Mckinely however was assassinated in 1901 and Roosevelt became the President of the United States As a bully activist Roosevelt took on hundreds of issues asserting his strong opinions in areas as diverse as morals literature art marriage divorce birth control and football He believed in equal education for women although he never championed equal rights He did not believe however that African Americans Native Americans or Asians were equal to whites ignoring the courageous role that black troops played at the Battle of San Juan Hill Roosevelt subscribed to the racist and imperialistic view that people of color were a burden that the white man must carry as part of his Christian duty Roosevelts engaging personality enhanced his popularity Aided by numbers of photographers cartoonists and portrait artists his features became symbols of national recognition mail addressed only with drawings of teeth and spectacles arrived at the White House without delay TR continued to be newsworthy in retirement especially during
