Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13 1743in Shadwell Virginia His parents were Peter and Jane Jefferson When Thomas was only fourteen his father died Once his father died he started to take classes with Rev James Maury When he turned seventeen he went to the College of William and Mary but he left after two years In 1760 he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses In1769 the town of Shadwell that Thomas was living burned down That meant that he was forced to move to Monticello Then in 1972 he married Martha Wayles Skelton They ended up having six children but only two of them lived passed their childhoods In 1775 he was chosen to be the delegate for Virginia in the Second Continental Congress Then in 1776 he did one of the things he is most remembered for He wrote the Declaration of Independence which made all the colonists free from Great Britain After that in 1777 he was elected the governor of Virginia Unfortunately that same year Martha Wayles Skelton died Eight years later he decided that he would start his career as an architect In 1785 he wrote the plans for the Virginia State Capitol Unfortunately he took a break from writing a plans to take a business trip to Paris While he was there he found out that they all ready started to build the capitol with only most of his plans not all of them He had to then get back to America and finish the plans After that he made designs for more and more buildings In 1790 Thomas wrote Report On Weights and Measures The basic idea of the report was to help people in the colonies to more understand how to use weights and know how to measure things Back then people where having trouble using measurements and weights The report ended up teaching more and more people about them Without
