Dracula You may have hear the name Vlad the Impaler before In fact he is a real person who existed in the 1400s However he was not as the legend of Dracula and vampires portray him Vlad the Impaler was born Vlad Tepes 1430 in Schassburg a town in Transylvania Vlad Dracul his father was the prince of Wallachia The name Dracula comes from his fathers name Dracul Drac in Romanian means devil Ulea as an ending in Romanian means son of Therefore the American interpretation of Dracula actually means son of the devil In 1438 Vlad and his family were imprisoned by the Turks The purpose of this was to guarantee his fathers loyalty to the sultan Here Vlad developed cynicism so evident in his approach to life and infused him in a machiavellan attitude toward political matters1 After his fathers death in 1447 Vlad could not take the throne This was was due to other powerful ruling families in Wallachia Eventually he gained dictatorship of all of Wallachia During his time of rule there Vlad fought against the Turks He had a strong resentment towards them because they had imprisoned he and his family when he was young Because of this hatred it influenced Vlad to created horrible torture methods he used on his enemies and his own people Such were burning impaling nailing binding skinning stoning and burning alive Vlad was the most famous for his impalements and got the nick name Vlad the Impaler because of it After battles it is said that enemies would be above the ground held up by wooden stakes and spears jabbed through them Vlads rule did have some advantages In his land any crime was punishable by death from lying to stealing even cheating These strick laws kept crime very low on the streets It was said that a person could leave a gold coin on the street and the next day theyd
