William BlakeWilliam Blake 1757-1827 was a very brilliant British poet and painterSongs of Inocence Songs of Experience The Marriage of Heaven and Hell TheFrench Revolution and Milton are a few of his works His poems are sometimes difficult to understand because he invented his own type of mythology in which he expressed his ideas1 His poems are symbolic and visionary which shows his very artistic imagination Blake was born in London and lived almost his whole life there As a child he claimed to have seen visions which would continue throughout the rest of his life that inspired some of his poetry2 Later in addition to writing and painting he was a book illustrator and engraver William Blake was a surrealist A surrealist is a person who believes that because of all of the conditioning that humans become so accustomed to to attain true inspiration one must get away from this conditioning which can only be done through the altering of the state of mind Blake often used drugs such as opium to achieve inspiration His quote When the doors of perception are cleansed man will see things as they truly are infinate describes symbolically his belief in surrealismHe believed that we have injustice and general unhappiness because our way of life is founded on mistaken beliefs We know only a small part of reality through our five senses you we concern ourselves almost entirely with scientific truth and materialistic values gained through our senses We will not understand the reality beyond our senses and gain full control of ourselves until we learn to trust our instincts energies and imaginations This was the basis of all personal social and religious truth for William Blake1 The most formative period in the life of William Blake are the years 1789 and 1790 It was in these two years that he produced his two greatest works Songs of Innocence 1789 and The Marriage of Heaven and Hell 1790
