William Lyon Mackenzie It is 1837 William Lyon Mackenzie newspaperman member of the Legislative Assembly and first mayor of Toronto has formed a rebellion against the Family Compact Why did he do it He wanted a new system of government in Upper Canada Therefore the Family Compact expelled him from the Legislative Assembly four times How should Mackenzie be viewed Mackenzie was a bold heroic person who faught for a democratic government for the rights of the people Mackenzie was a bold person because of his brave ideas that he interpreted He would put all of his ideas and editorials on his newspaper The Colonial Advocate One of his ideas was to try to stop the oligarchy of the Family Compact He disliked the fact that Upper Canada was ruled by a small group of people who did not care about the general populations opinions and views Another one of Mackenzies ideas was his suggestion of a new government system His idea of a new government was to elect a Legislative Council and Lieutenant Governor instead of appointing them He wanted the people to pick their leader Lastly his idea was to make the new system of government fair He wanted everybody to have the same amount of education instead of just the Family Compact He wanted all of the farmers to get equal amount of land and to organize it so that it would not have poor transportation All of Mackenzies ideas were bold and fair and they all had to do with what we have today democracy Mackenzie was a very democratic person His ideas about government change were all about democracy His idea of writing editorials in his newspaper about the Family Compact is using the right of opinion He wanted his opinions to be known throughout Upper Canada Another idea he used that related to democracy is the way he spoke out at the Family Compact about their views
