William Shakespeare is regarded as the most popular playwright and poet of all time Born in 1564 he gained notoriety during the Elizabethan Era in England with a vast array of plays including Hamlet Julius Caesar and Romeo and Juliet He also compiled huge collections of sonnets fourteen-line poems with rhyming patterns which poets would study for centuries after his death His impact on the literary world only grows stronger as time goes on Students and scholars around the world continue to study and analyze his pieces Shakespeares legacy will live on through his work as it has for the past 400 years The header for chapter IV of the novel Gaudy Night is an excerpt from a William Shakespeare sonnet published in 1609 The passage is taken from Sonnet LXXXIX which is only one fourteen-line poem in a collection of over one hundred sonnets written by Shakespeare The first and last lines of each sonnet often correlate with the previous and subsequent verses forming a connection and smooth transition between the pieces Common themes are also evident within the sonnets in this case a poets relationship with a youth The quote used by Dorothy Sayers to open chapter IV is poem by Shakespeare about a relationship about to end It is a continuation of a sequence of events that occurred in earlier sonnets These related pieces are often referred to as the Fair Youth Sonnets Shakespeare-sonnetscom In this verse the poet affirms his love for a youth and vows never to harbor any ill will even if the union is severed The excerpt used by Sayers is the central part of the poets pledge The sonnet opens with a reference to an event that occurred in earlier passages The youth is angry with the poet over something that may or may not have taken place The youth feels betrayed by the poet who chooses to accept all blame He offers that if the
