Tony Lee Jr Intro to Buddhism Professor Hebbar 14 May 2001 A complete history of Korean Buddhism is impossible to summarize in a short paper as this but an important personality who has helped shape and develop it can be greatly appreciated Before I introduce this personality I would like to give a brief history of the introduction of Son Buddhism in Korea From the beginnings of Chaan in China Korean monks had been intimately involved with the traditions as disciples of the great masters Therefore it received an early introduction into Korea where it is know by its Korean pronunciation Son The transmission proceeded at a rather quick pace throughout the Silla period until several different Son lineages were established at separate mountains scattered throughout the peninsula These mountain lineages were known as the Nine Mountain Son The Silla monk Pomnang first brought son to Korea After traveling to China where he studied under the Fourth Patriarch of the Chan School Toa-hsin he returned to Korea in the later half of the seventh century and passed his teachings onto the monk Sinhaeng Sinhaeng in turn traveled to China and studied under the monk Taejo Chigong a fellow Korean who was a disciple of the second patriarch of the Northern School Sinhaengs approach which was a combination of his first teachers transmission from the Fourth Patriarch and the so-called gradual teachings of the Northern School continued to be passed on in Korea to Chunbom and Hyeun until it reached the monk Chison Tohon Chison founded the Huiyang san school of Son in 879 the oldest Son lineage in Korea Within a hundred year period covering the eight and ninth centuries eight other mountain schools of Son were started all founded by Korean disciples of major Chan masters Of these eight seven were founded by disciples of first-generation successors of Ma-tsu Tao-i Only the last school formed the Sumi san school belonged to a
