Anecdotal data suggests that aggression viewed on television and film is more likely to influence the type of aggressive behavior displayed when provoked than the level of provocation necessary to insight aggression Children exposed to aggressive behavior are more likely to imitate that behavior in the presence of the aggressive model Additionally children exhibit generalized aggressive behavior to new settings outside of the presence of the aggressive model Bandura Ross Ross 1961 hypothesized that children exposed to aggressive models would later imitate the observed aggressive behavior when exposed to mildly frustrating scenarios Additionally the researchers reasoned that the less realistic the aggressive model was the less likely the subjects would imitate the aggressive behavior Bandura et al 1961 tested the hypothesis by exposing a group of children to three separate aggression models and then exposing the participants to a mildly frustrating scenario The children were separated into three experimental groups and individually exposed to three separate aggression models The first group was exposed to a real-life aggression model The second group was exposed to a filmed aggression model The third group was exposed to an aggression model as portrayed by cartoon characters It should be noted that the models in the real-life and filmed aggression scenarios were adults After the exposure each child was individually escorted to a separate room where a set of toys were displayed for the subjects to play with Once the child was fully involved in play the child was told they could not play with the toys anymore The child was then escorted to another room with different toys where the aggressive behavior was observed and measured Aggression was measured over a twenty minute period which was broken out into five second intervals for a total of 240 response units per subjectThe children in each of the aggressive model groups displayed significantly higher rates of
