Comparing and Contrasting the Transcendental and Anti-Transcendental Movements

This essay argues that transcendentalism and anti-transcendentalism were two sides of the same coin: despite opposite understandings of human nature, each pushed back against preexisting traditional ideas. The student uses Emerson ("Self-Reliance") and Hawthorne ("The Minister's Black Veil") as examples.
