Poe vs Dickinson Poets can be so similar and yet so different at the same time Edger Allen Poe and Emily Dickinson are two great American poets that are this way Edger Allen Poes works reflected his eerie lifestyle and personality His poetry most often reflected loneliness and fear Edger Allen Poes poems usually took place in a dark or creepy setting In The Raven has starts the poem with Once upon a midnight dreary while I pondered weak and weary The midnight dreary shows how his poems usually were In The Raven he also writes about a lonely man mourning the lost of his beloved Lenore and is haunted by a creepy raven who symbolizes Lenores ghost The thumpish rhymes to this poem give it a somewhat nightmarish affect by showing the narrators fear and pain The thumpish rhymes symbolizes the beating heart of the narrator giving the reader a creepy feeling like when they can hear their own heartbeat when they feel fear Poes poems do not create suspense and do not frighten the reader but give the reader a chill to the bone A good example of this effect is when in The Raven the bird repeats Nevermore Poe also has incredible rhyme schemes in The Raven such as Once upon a midnight dreary while I pondered weak and weary line 1 rhymes perfectly with While I nodded nearly napping suddenly there came a tapping line 3 Emily Dickinson poems have an extraordinary grasp and insight into her world Emily Dickinson themes were mostly about nature or great unanswered question of the universe In I heard a Fly buzz when I died Miss Dickinson asks if you are just food for the flies or if there is heaven Miss Dickinson also wrote in free verse In My life closed twice before its close has no rhyme to it Miss Dickinson poems didnt always have a point
