Brave New World and 1984 are both literary works that describe governing bodies who exercise complete control over their societies the differences lie in the ways they control the people and the reasons they do so The people of Brave New World are controlled from the begining Huxelys world is run by a few World Controllers who createthe worlds population Waitt 1 These controllers have taken the pain of lifes ambiguities and indecisions upon their own shoulders in order to spare those less capable from having to endure such emotional and physcological presure The people are made in the Hatcheries and Conditioning Centres it is here that they are prepared to spend the rest of their lives as square pegs in square holes and round pegs in round holes Waitt 1 This control is achieved in two ways 1 oxygen deprevation the less oxygen the less intelligence and the less physically developed the person is and 2 hypnopaedia or sleep conditioning phrases drilled over and over into the minds of the children as they sleep Waitt 1 The net result of this conditioning is a society that is totally and deliberately infantile All activities are transitory trivial and mindless--promiscuity replaces passion immediate sensory stimulation feelies replaces art hallucinatory escape soma replaces personal growth Neilson 769 It is through these controls that the Controllers have created a society in which there is no disease no warfare and no sadness Earhart 1 The Controllers have created a society with large groups of identical people In doing this they have gained complete controll because when all humans are alike and conditioned to be content with their social class it leaves no room or conflict and therefore stability results It is from this stability that the Controllers gain their power with everyone content and happy with where they are in life they dont question anything and with out sorrow and despair to compare other feelings and emotions to they
