Isolation occurs in many forms and affects everyone It can cause great pain and suffering or it can result in triumph These three examples I feel illustrate the different types of isolation perfectly Day of the Butterfly is written by Alison Munro and illustrates the isolation of a young girl named Myra who is depend on by her brother My next example is written by Doris Lessing its called The Tunnel which shows the intentionally brought on isolation of a young boy who separates himself from his family and friends Another case that fits the topic of isolation is the segregation of a young high school student who found himself in utter seclusion and with no friends He had no one to turn to and no one seemed to care that isolation was causing a frightening spiral into depression and desperation He eventually committed suicide this shows the grave effects of extreme isolation Myra in the short story Day of the Butterfly is not allowed to become a child which isolates her from her peers Responsibility is the main reason Myra is isolated Her brother depends on her for all his physical and mental needs Because of this Myra was forced out of the in-group and was eventually forgotten Later in the story Myra is diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer and is again isolated from the childhood that she never had It is unfortunate that Myra never got to experience a childhood instead was rushed from a little girl to a responsible young adult Jerry unlike Myra and Danny chooses to willingly separate himself from his family and the safety of the beach He does this because it is his journey from a boy to a man To do this Jerry needs isolate himself and begin his extremely difficult task of swimming through a tunnel Once Jerry has committed himself to the swim he cannot change his mind He is
