The Jewelery by Guy de Maupassant and No Ones a Mystery by Elizabeth Tallent are two stories which both imply different types of conclusions These authors use completely dissimilar elements to approach their final message The Jewlery and No Ones a Mystery are two very unique stories Although they do not have many obvious similarities they both explore underlying expression of love and betrayal In the story The Jewelery the gender of the protagonist was male whereas in the story No Ones a Mystery the gender of the protagonist was female is a story about the rivalry between two scientists that ultimately causes the destruction of an innocent young woman Hawthorne creates a symbolic relationship between Rappaccinirsquos garden and the Garden of Eden in which Beatrice Rappaccini fulfills the role of innocent and pure Eve and Giovanni Guasconti symbolizes the shallow and insincere Adam Beatrice possesses a child like innocence and is very naive She even states I dreamed only to love thee and be with thee a little time so let thee pass away leaving but thine image in my heart This passage shows her purity of her love for Giovanni Thus Beatrice symbolizes the innocence of Eve Beatrice also states Holy Virgin pity me a poor heartbroken child identifying that Beatrice believes that she possesses the qualities one being innocence of a child Giovanni also shares this opinion he remarks that her manners seem childish sometimes every time they meet she flies to his side with confidence as unreserved as they have been playmates from early infancy--as if they were playmates still Giovanni believes that Beatrice is simple natural affectionate and guileless Her organism is capable of producing lethal effects on the living creatures she comes in contact with but every time such an accident occurs she shows sympathy and sorrow All these qualities prove Beatricersquos innocence and morally pure nature Beatricersquos qualities of innocence and purity lead to her emotion of guilt
