The 1800s were a time of grief and desperation as lifestyles weretaken away from the Southern region during the Civil War Stories toldfrom generation to generation talk about the hatred of the South and thebitterness that follows with those stories What I am boldly asking iswhat is the actual truth focusing not only on those from two hundredyears ago but even back to the 1960s Because of the slavery which hasbeen dealt with for ages of time we can observe through text thesimilarity and contrast of things then and nowAfter reading and watching The Help I began to research deeper intothis subject Was this just a story written for an emotional wreckingfeeling or was it something more After visiting Stocketts webpage Ilearned that she gained inspiration for her characters from herchildhood in Jackson Mississippi Her grandmother had a house servantthat raised her children She also had other influences such as AbileneCooper Abilene has a striking resemblance of personality to Stockettsown character in the book Aibileen Cooper who according to Stockettis of no relationship to the former Stockett contended in her notethat she modeled Aibileen on a long-dead black maid called Demetrie whoworked for the authors family in Jackson The Help is purely fictionand the character was loosely inspired by my own relationship withDemetrie HYPERLINK httpwwwdailymailcomuk wwwdailymailcomuk Stockett portrays the deep South as very rich and luxurious but at thesame time there were riots going on People were being shot everydaybecause they didnt follow the social norm they were being tortured andpersecuted A quote I was told by my grandfather was that some houseservants werent there to fluff your pillows and draw your bath waterthey were there to mind their own business take care of the kids and dowhat you needed However in some cases such as my grandfathersthey had house servants one of which was named Gertrude which werevery well taken care of and became part of the family My family
