In the city of Orlando Florida there are two governing law enforcement agencies the Orlando Police Department and the Orange County Sheriffs Office Even with around twelve-hundred sworn officers patrolling the streets there are still only two service weapons officers in Orlando carry on their side the Glock 17 and the Sig Sauer P226 pistols Why is there two different pistols though and should they not all carry the same weapon The answer comes down to person preference between the agencies I am going to discuss what the differences of the two weapons are and how the differences can affect the choice an officer makes on choosing the lifeline he holds at his sideThe operating system a weapon has is what makes all the difference when it comes to how the weapon functions The Glock 17 operates on a single action only safe action safety system This means that there is no hammer on the weapon and every shot has the same trigger pull There is also no mechanical safety that the officer can operate by hand instead the weapon has the safety build into it The Sig Sauer P226 however operates on a singledouble action and it does have a mechanical safety with an auto de-cocker This means that when the officer attempts to fire the first shot the visible hammer must be pulled to the rear completely before the shot will go off This extra step not only takes more time than the single action pistol but the trigger pull is also increased How this could affect the officers shooting style is when he or she practices at the range he or she must compensate for the first shot on a singledouble action to be a heavier trigger pull as opposed to the same trigger pull every time on the single action weaponsCarrying capacity may be the most important part in a law enforcement weapon it not only allows the officer to have
