Both Revelation and A Good Man is Hard to Findwritten by Flannery OConnor are stories about hypocrisy Hypocrisy means feigning to be what one is not or false assumption of an appearance of virtue or religion Here in both of these stories the main charcters MrsTurpin and the grandmother are hypocritical and judgmental In Revelation MrsTurpin believes that she is one of Gods chosen She is very prejudice and judges people by first noticing their feet When she was in the doctors waiting room MrsTurpin looked at their the white trashy mpther had on what appeared to be bedroom slippers black straw with gold braid threaded through them-exactly what you would expect her to have on She seems to have a particular problem with Negroes and with certain kinds of white folks When she is not feeling self-satisfiedat how well she has done in life she spends her time drawing little heirarchies black at the bottom well most blacks except those who own property then the white trash then those who own their own homes then those like she and Claud who own homes and land She even go so far as to rehearse in her mind the idea that if Jesus had told her that if she were to choose between - a nigger or white trash - and she had to take one she would after pleading for sometime accept being black provided she wasnt a trashy one Of course we know by now that it is just extreme hypocrisy on the part of MrsTurpin as she would no more accept being black than she would fly to the moon It is all a game - self descructivecrypto-Christian game of falso morality and grand gestures This becomes clearly evident when having embarkon straightening out the classes into their proper order as a means of getiing herself to sleepthey all become jumbled Usually by the time she
