Comparison essay on Loneliness of the longdistance runner and chariots of fire I am looking at the respective personalities of the two characters and the influences which shaped their respective lives their attitudes towards authority their motivation in running and their respective ideas concerning victory and defeat Both Colin and Erics lives have been shaped by their surrounding and the areas in which they were raised Colin was raised in lower class society He grew up thinking that the way to live was the way of crime He was brought up to believe that cops and other authority figures where not there to help but only to make things worse for you in the long run He is loyal and honest in ways only he and others of lower class society can understand Colin leads a life of crime and dishonesty to everybody but himself Eric on the other hand was raised in a lower class society but on the side of a missionary He learned to respect each side of higher and lower class He is honest and loyal to but in a very different way then Colin He is honesty in its purest form Eric obides by Gods Law whereas Colin obides by his owe rules Eric is a free spirit He runs like a wild animal God is a factor in all aspects of Erics life The two do share one common factor though They both run for the love of it Colin Smith has different views and attitudes towards authority He looks at different individuals in different authoritative positions differently from one to the next He also seems to have put high class society in an almost authoritative position shown to us by his themus analogies His attitude toward the governor and high class society are one in the same as he looks at the governor as a member of the
