In Fired for Being Beautiful an argument paper published in the New York Times on 16 July 2013 Michael Kimmel an author of Angry White Men American Masculinity at the End of an Era arguesthat women are being treated unfair by male bossin the workplace as a reason of lookismKimmel supports his thesis by showing three real life examples that occurred in the US The first one he talks about a 33-year-old woman names Melissa Nelson who is being fired by her male dentist boss because she is too attractive for him The next example is about American Apparel top executive who fired employees he sees dont look attractive to him The third one is about a Muslim teenager girl who applies to work at Abercrombie Fitch but doesnt get hired because her appearance does not meet the appearance qualification Kimmel also defines some terms to make it easy for his audience to understand his argument Beside the court does not respond effectively to the people who face discrimination based on beauty the court says any employee may be dismissed from work if the boss sees that an employee isirresistible attractionKimmel goes on and talks about men also being treated unfair outside of the workplace regarding their look but there is no sign of men are treated unfairly in the workplace As a result Kimmel shows that men have more privilege than women in the workplace Kimmel intends audience is the New York Times readers and his purpose of writing this article is to give the awareness of his audience what they missed about gender discrimination since we have the constitution I think Kimmel achieves his purpose with his audience but there are many aspects that need to be improved Kimmel gives examples of life situation occurring in the US implying that being beautiful and ugly is a problem at the workplace for women He illustrates both genders are discriminated by
