Culture and Intellectual Life Throughout global history political conditions in some civilizations have produced golden ages A golden age is a time when the cultural life of a civilization flourishes One of these times was the Pax Romana The Pax Romana created a world everyday better known better cultivated and more civilized then before according to a roman writer The economy of the Pax Romana was booming They traded with many other countries such as Africa Egypt and India They produced gold wine and manufactured goods People also traveled spreading knowledge and ideas The taxes were used for entertainment such as the gladiators Taxes were also used to feed the poor Women were also part of the economy by holding public office They also ran theyre own businesses and contributed to the growth of the arts Another facet of Romes golden age was its arts They borrowed the concept of realism from the Greeks but they seemed to capture the essence of expression in theyre sculptures Yet sometimes theyre sculpture was more idealistic then normal For example they would sculpt a statue of a local citizen and make him look more heroic or power then he actually was They also borrowed the Greeks architecture Although the Greeks wanted simple elegance the Romans wanted massive structures They improved on the arch or the dome in such structures as the pantheon During this time education flourished Children learned to read and write even those of the lower classes Many wealthy Romans hired private tutors These Greek slaves taught the children roman history As a result of the spread of education from different parts of the world women gained greater freedom The political conditions of a civilization effect the quality of life in that time The Pax Romana was two centuries of peace so the Romans had the opportunity to indulge themselves in luxuries The Romans advanced
