What do you do when you are face to face with a decision that controls the rest of your outcome A significant theme in the novel Ethan Frome is making decisions Throughout the novel Ethan Frome was forced to decide on critical matters For example his fathers death and the misfortunes following it had put a premature end to Ethans studies This meant he stopped his schooling because he decided to be with his family during this tragic event Another important decision he made was not asking Andrew Hale for an advance on the lumber he sold him which he was to use to leave Zeena and run of with Mattie to the west Even if he had the heart to desert her Zeena he could have done so only by deceiving two kindly people who had pitied him Ethan Frome also decided to commit suicide with Mattie by hitting the big elm coasting own the slopes which was not successful As Ethan was pondering on the matter it became very silent so silent it was as if they were already inside their coffins and Ethan thought Perhaps itll feel like this After I shant feel anything Moments after that they both rode down the slopes into the big elm that would have destroyed their pains of separation In conclusion Ethan Frome made decisions that impacted his life immensely and some which might have taken his life
