On November 24 2013 I attended a visit to the An Lac Temple Our guide Sister Angie gave many examples of the seven dimensions from Ninian Smart and a lot of them were very well defined I will describe the experience I had by demonstrating some observations I made and providing descriptions of all seven dimensionsI noticed the temple as I drove to my destination It looked to me exactly how I would expect a temple would look in China or Vietnam The next thing I noticed was a happy Buddha statue in the front of the temple As I entered there was another Buddha opposite the front door It is said that the ideal place for the Laughing Buddha is opposite the main door so it is the first thing a person sees as they enter the room or templeWe took seats separate from the members of the temple There was a small pad to sit on with a small desk in front of each position There were many candles and offerings of water and fruits on a table in the front The offerings were left to ask for the care of a fellow member who was ill A large statue of Buddha was in the front of the room demonstrating a correct pose for meditation There was a long moment of silence where we took the position of the Buddha and learned how to meditateThe temple and Buddha statues would be part of the aesthetic and material dimensions Wealso saw statues of mythical lohans thatrepresent particular BuddhistsThey portray virtues and qualities such as skills in meditation abilities to memorize text and the skills in teaching dharma Bowker 68 The lohans are the enlightened beings and can be enlightened in any position and there are 18 different enlightened beings bowker 68Sister Angie taught us that all life involves suffering When one attains enlightenment they pass through four stages The four stages can
