America the land of free and the home of the brave-- this common phrase puts a tear in most peoples eye when heard However America the democracy doesnt quite have the same ring when spoken Depending on the person some people might say that America is a democracy and others might not agree Likewise a math teacher might say that a rectangle is not always a square whereas a student might not agree The truth is that America is not a true democracy The people dont have direct say in our government but America is a representative democracy where the people have an indirect say in the government The United States of America is a type of democracy in which the people elect representatives who in turn make decisions about the government The people do not have a direct vote on every single issue because this would be a terribly inefficient and sadly only half of registered US voters vote anyway our elected legislators vote as we constituents wish In theory anybody who has half of the people voting for him can become president as long as that person gets the right amount of electoral college votes but it does not always work out that way as we saw in the 2000 election results Politics are the reason If Joe Schmoe wanted to run for office he probably wouldnt walk around door-to-door because he wouldnt be well- recognized If he wanted to win he would have to start building up a political career and eventually get one of the two political parties to back him up Then maybe he would go through primaries and be on TV and became well- known and maybe stand a chance provided he could raise enough funds The political parties come into play in the American version of the democracy It is very hard to have true citizen representation when only two parties can support viable candidates It
