Every year between the end of November and the end of December Jewish people around the world celebrate the holiday of Chanukah the Festival of Lights Chanukah word means rededication begins on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev on the year of 3622 This holiday celebrates the events which took place over 2300 years ago in the land of Judea which is now Israel In order to remember this miracle we light a Menorah for the eight days of Chanukah This year 5765 2004-2005 Chanukah began on December 8 and ended on December 15 2004 As you can see Hashem is always watching over the Jews keeping them under his protection Chanukah is an eight day holiday which started when a great victory of the Jews came about The story starts when a war was led by the Maccabees Jews against Greeks They were treated unfairly in Syria Israel because of their religious beliefs by ruler Antiochus III No Jew was allowed to practice anything religious or if caught death would follow so most would do it secret The unfair religious treatment caused the war to emerge and with their victory the nation of Israel wouldnt be under the Greeks control anymore In addition to the victorious war another great miracle came about When the nation of Israel entered the Temple to themselves for they were ritually impure because they killedcaused death during the battles finding the whole temple to be destroyed The torah was ripped up everything was smashed idols and pigs were placed etc When someone was impure in this particular situation they could only be purified through a process that takes seven days Pure olive oil was needed with an unbroken seal of the high priest on it was for the ritual but it was only after these seven days that the people were able to find a supply of pure oil far away Not only that it
