MOHAWK INDIANS Native Americans are people who are local to the Americas They are also known as American Indians They tend to have light brown skin brown eyes and dark straight hair The name Indian was first applied to them by Christopher Columbus who mistakenly believed that the mainland and the islands of the Americas were part of the Indies in Asia The Native Americans of North America are believed to be descendants of the Mongoloids early hunters and gatherers who migrated from Asia to North America around 30000bc During the Stone Age it is believed that these people crossed a land bridge across what is now the Bering Strait during the Pleistocene age The Mohawks are a Native North American tribe of the Iroqoian family and of the Eastern Woodlands culture area They were once the eastern and leading people of the five Nations of the Iroqoian Confederacy The Mohawks had nine members on the confederacy council three of them from each tribe The Wolf Bear and the Turtle The Mohawk tribes lived in the Mohawk River valley which was a woodland area with the Mohawk River running right through the valley They were a non-migration tribe The women of the tribe farmed and the men fished or hunted depending on the season Because the Mohawk River ran through the valley the natives had the ability to travel most places by canoe The families lived together in large bark covered huts called longhouses Each community was governed by a ruling council and a village chief One of their most famous chiefss was Chief Joseph The tribes first encounter with Europeans was in 1609 when they fought against the French explorer Samuel de Champlain They were earlier associated with the Dutch from whom they brought firearms and later most became strong allies of the British fighting with
