Lisa Soukup Mrs Kenn AP Language and Composition 6 September 2000 Take everyday life and exploit it by creating pompous over blown melodramas Drag out exaggerated plots over a series of months Have only the most beautiful actors and actresses Do all this and you are guaranteed to be a successful daytime soap opera that reels in millions of loyal viewers The common daytime soap opera reels in the bored stay-at-home parent the easily influenced summer teen audience and the night time worker catching their dose of excitement before they head off to work by taking everyday life and spicing it up Finding ones true love Plotting against your sons ex-wife Stealing your best friends significant other Having a secret affair with your employer Finding out the person of your dreams is really your long lost sibling Combine all of these dubious plots into one hour of pure entertainment a day you will create a story line as addicting and powerful as any drug In some ways soaps create the unattainable perfect life that would be the envy of any normal person To further reel in attraction these perplexing plots are stretched over months the resolution only being reached weeks after the climax This leaves viewers on the edge of their seats wanting more now but having to return the next day By some strange miracle writers can drag one sentence of your favorite character over two or more days What normal person can walk away from the TV when a gorgeous star is about to tell the two girls who love him which one intends to marry Yet another and possibly the most important way of reeling in viewers is through sex appeal The casts are loaded with sexy teen idols idealistic husbands and dream mistresses The casts consist of two types of men Tall dark and handsome Bleached blond and beautiful And of course all of their bodies look like
