It wasnt too long ago when a person couldnt be openly gay Even today gay men and woman fight for equality By having a gay and lesbian literary category learning about something unfamiliar can finally be made understandable By allowing this category it not only allows people to learn about each other but also about themselves Less then a century ago a book might be banned and burned as many have been if it told a story of a homosexual and dare explain his or her sex life To many the lives of homosexuals are disgusting and wrong However its a fact that people without any knowledge of a particular subject might hold views that are incorrect and wrong themselves For example the myth that all gay people have AIDS With knowledge comes understanding A class about this subject is one step better then a literary category People like myself can learn first hand about the inside life of a homosexual Things that I may never have the opportunity to learn about again The book Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown is a great tool when it comes to enlightening people about the truths of homosexuality It is a simple story about the life of a lesbian The book spans much of her life and reveals that she is completely normal besides the fact that she prefers woman It happily dismisses many preconceptions people have towards gays A specialized literary category lights the way for people looking to expand their horizons Even people trying to learn about others might end up learning about themselves It is necessary to create the proper environment to discuss the new information one might discover A class specializing in the reading of sexuality or focusing the gay and lesbian reading category will help to properly understand the new found material There is no reason why having a gay and lesbian literary category would be harmful If someone doesnt want to
