Rationalization and Procrastination Rationalization and Procrastination are two evils of the world which I feel are the cause of many of the worlds problems Procrastination is defined as the postponement of doing something especially as a regular practice Rationalization is defined as an attempt to justify behavior normally considered irrational or unacceptable by offering an apparently reasonable explanation Rationalization and procrastination are considered to be evils in the Bible Rationalization is one side of the story I have a friend that I will call Bob Bob was pulled over by a police officer and given a ticket for running a stop sign He was given a 120 ticket He rationalized in his mind that it was the polices fault and that the officer shouldnt have been there He knew that his actions had been safe and that he had indeed rolled through the sign Bob had to work really hard to pay for the ticket Generally rationalization is unconscious We slip into it unaware and gradually it becomes a crutch for those who do not want to take responsibility for their actions Rationalization after a period of time begins to numb ones reality creating a world of no responsibility Procrastination is the other side of the story I once had an English essay to write I had had a few days to ponder on a subject and gather information but I reluctantly procrastinated In the last moments of scrounging for information I was not able to complete the essay in time I wound up turning the paper in late and then suffered the consequences and got a poorer grade than I had wanted Procrastination robs those who do it of their self-creativity and self-reliability Edward Young poet and writer is credited with saying Procrastination is the thief of time Year after year it steals till all are fled And in the mercies of a moment leaves The vast concerns of an eternal scene
