A hot topic for debate at the moment is Should cannabis be legalised This issue has been discussed in parliament and public places it seems everyone has a view on it Although I think it should be legalised I will discuss both sides of the argument Cannabis is currently a class B schedule 1 drug which means it has no recognised medical value For possession the maximum penalty is five years in prison plus an unlimited fine - a hefty price to pay just for smoking a joint The maximum penalty for possession with intent to supply is 15 years imprisonment and an unlimited fine The possession of cannabis seeds in the UK is legal although it is illegal to grow them Cannabis oil is a class A drug which will have a much higher penalty if you are caught with it Cannabis has been used as far back as 28BC in China where it was found to be useful as it could be made into rope paper and other fibres later on in time it was discovered that cannabis could be used to get high As it is a naturally occurring herb it has no side-effects like the ones associated with synthetic drugs As it has no side effects people suffering from multiple sclerosis AIDS glaucoma and other diseases have benefited from its effects If cannabis was legalised it could be used to help people with those conditions If cannabis was legalised though people like teenagers who try drugs because of the risk of being caught with an illegal substance may move onto other harder illegal drugs possibly relating in more drug - related deaths When a person is under the influence of cannabis they are like a person who is drunk - their reactions are slower and so driving a car is dangerous If cannabis was legalised people could smoke it and drive - as it is currently NOT illegal
