indicate paragraph breaks PAPER An organizations culture varies as widely as the nature of work itself Oftentimes a unique different mix of values and norms govern the cultural environment of an organization In todays fast changing business environment the cultural make-up of an organizations plays a critical role in the success of the firm to achieve its strategic objectives In this paper I will explore the idea of organizational culture and discuss factors associated with understanding the reality of an organizations culture with examples presented to illustrate my discussion points Culture is not an easily defined concept but generally it is the values beliefs and norms expressed in work practices and behavior An organizations culture is not necessarily an articulated list of values found in a carefully worded statement or available as an appendix in an annual report Rather culture is created by the organization itself How employees treat and interact with one another and the values of the employees and the organization such as work ethic manifest an organizations culture Some cultures encourage innovation and risk taking while others punish those who challenge established norms and practices Mavericks are welcomed in certain occupations but not especially in the military culture for example Is decision making shared or autocratically dictated How closely employee well being is maintained also contributes greatly to establishing the work cultural These are all factors creating to the development of a cultural environment at the o ffice Some of the most visible expressions of the culture are called artifacts These include the architecture and decor the clothing people wear the organizational processes and structures and the rituals symbols and celebrations Other concrete manifestation of culture are found in commonly used language and jargon logos brochures company slogans as well as status symbols such as cars window offices titles and of course value statements and priorities An outsider can often spot these artifacts easily
