Health Report Osteosclerosis Osteosclerosis is the term used when describing any type of hardening or abnormal density of the bones Many different diseases fall under this category Some are harmless and easily treated while others are harder to find manage and treat A few examples of osteosclerosis diseases are as follows -Osteopoikilosis- where small dense bone spots are found at the ends of long bones relatively harmless -Osteopetrosis- referred to as marble bones more malignant forms cause problems like loss of vision hearing and facial paralysis -Osteomyelosclerosis- where normal bone marrow cells are replaced by abnormal formation of fibrous tissues and malformed bone cells -Hereditary Hyperphosphatasia- where there are severe skeletal deformities such as a large area of dense bone at base of the skull -Melorheostosis- produces painful areas of increased density in the bones of one limb -Osteoporosis- this is where bones deteriorate due to lack normally of calcium The cause of osteosclerosis is normally through genetic or inherited defects however no clear pattern can always be seen It can be diagnosed a number of ways yet most forms are not painful and some are never diagnosed Most are found through the use of x-rays Treatments vary based on which form the patient has Most of the treatments are more along the lines of alleviating any pain or discomfort rather then curing the disease Symptoms normally include pain in joints and limbs visible deformities and problems like hearing or sight loss
