Rock Art of Africa Several thousand years ago human beings started life in Africa As they began to organize themselves into societies they equally began to produce various tools implements and art Rock art and paintings are very early forms of art and have been discovered and preserved in many different parts of the continent Between 27000 and 25500 BC human beings created some of their earliest paintings on rock faces in Namibia Southern Africa They also made images of animals as well as human figures by cutting or punching shallow lines into the rock These drawings are known as rock engravings The images were made on the walls of caves where the people gathered for ceremonies and other communal activities In the paintings and engravings they pictured themselves dancing hunting taking part in ritual activities or herding their animals In addition to the many paintings they have also depicted important symbols In other parts of Southern Africa we find paintings showing plants and some animals which no longer exist today The early paintings are characterized by their peacefulness and appear very simple naturalistic and colorful - painted in beautiful combinations of earth tones Later paintings are less carefully executed and include elaborate scenes of ceremonies raids and battles In North Africa several rock engravings have survived in the Nubian and Sahara deserts as well as the Nile Valley Although the Sahara desert is one of the driest and least welcoming parts of the world today it was once very fertile with lots of rainfall vegetation and a variety of animals including elephants giraffes buffalos and rhinoceros - none of which can be found in the region today The Sahara began to dry up between 8000-7000 BC Before this the people who inhabited the area created very large engravings and paintings of their lives and environments on rock boulders and cave walls Across the Sahara there were over 40000
