About 200 Years ago Pearl Harbor was a little inlet not even known to man Now Oahu one of the little islands of Hawaii is the biggest military command on earth There are also headquarters for many military installations such as the Pacific Fleet Fleet Marines Pacific Air Forces and Submarine Forces The History Of Pearl Harbor p1 Many of the great nations like France America and Great Britain thought that Hawaii was the turning point for who would control the Pacific Ocean Since Hawaii was in the middle of the Pacific Ocean Pearl Harbor was protected from attack by boat and was just looked at for many years by many nations who could have used a well placed military installation The first person to be interested in Pearl Harbor was Captain George Vancouver He took a small boat into the inlet because a shallow water entrance blocked it When he got back he wrote about the chances that it would have to be a military installation He thought that it could be a great military establishment After Vancouvers visit other people went to look at the inlet Lt Charles B Malden was the first person to take a thorough survey of the harbor It was a very good place to hold a military settlement It had a great supply of food and other necessities and the weather was always very good The History Pearl Harbor p2 There was also no other harbor within 2000-mile radius On November 9 1887 the US owned Pearl Harbor In 1891 President Harrison wanted to convince Congress that Pearl Harbor would be a successful Naval establishment The US was presently making ships and needed a place to put them In 1894 the Navy sent surveyors to check out Pearl Harbor They found out that it would be easy to dredge the entrance to Pearl Harbor A naval station was built in May 1899 The History Pearl Harbor p2
