Tampa Theatre was built in 1926 by famed theatre architect John Eberson Its interior is designed as an atmospheric style theater giving theater-goers the impression that they are seated outside in a lavish Mediterranean courtyard Above them is a magical-looking nighttime sky complete with ninety-nine twinkling stars In its heyday Tampa had nearly three-dozen movie theaters Even then Tampa Theatre was enormously popular tickets cost 25-cents and it was the first building in all of Tampa to be air-conditioned This was the beginning of an era It was the first time in history the common man could afford such opulence even if it was for only two hoursHowever in the 1960s and 1970s as people migrated to the suburbs attendance at inner city movie theaters declined and the majority of Tampas theaters were demolished This was nearly the case with Tampa Theatre Fortunately Tampas citizens and City leaders joined forces and were able to rescue this jewel of a theaterTampa Theatre has since been acquired by the City of Tampa restored at a cost of over 2 million declared a Tampa City landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places Currently the theater hosts over 600 events per year and has an average annual attendance of over 150000 people Tampa Theatres continuing success has become a nationwide standard on how once endangered historic movie theaters can once again thrive as they did nearly a century ago
