For over two thousand years human beings have had a notion that all matter could only be broken down to a certain point and beyond that would only be a sample which displays its characteristics Democritus an ancient Greek philosopher named this unit atomos which means indivisible Two thousand years later modern human beings adopted the name atoms to address these particles which are now known to be constructed of even smaller particles one of them known as a top quark During the time of Democritus atoms were thought to be little spheres that simply could not be divided any further Later ordinary people accepted the theory of atoms and scientists such as J J Thompson Ernest Rutherford and many more began to study the composition of the atom In 1890 J J Thompson proposed a theory which said that the atom was actually similar to a blueberry muffin He stated that the electrons negatively charged subatomic particles were fixed in place around the nucleus positively charged particle inside the atom Around 1911 Ernest Rutherford performed an experiment and uncovered that the atom was comprised of a small sphere of positive charged called the nucleus and negatively charged electrons which were orbiting the nucleus As time passed more researchers have continued the study of subatomic particles hoping to add to or correct the theories made by early scientists In 1964 Murray Glenn-Mann and George Zweig suggested that many particles could be explained as combinations of just 3 fundamental particles called quarks The surprising part of Gell-Mann and Zweigs idea of the quarks was that they had to assign these quarks electric charges of and units of the proton charge which were never observed earlier At first the quarks were regarded as fiction but experiments have convinced physicists that quarks actually do exist There are six different types of quarks Up Down Charm Strange Top and Bottom The up u quark charm
